This K98 is a Russian Capture gun. It has a code and date of S/42 G. This signifies that it is a first year production gun made at the MauserWerke A.G. Oberndorf A.N. Factory in 1935. There were only 182,317 of them made which is a very low production number concerning K98s making this one hard to come by and collectible.
Being an early production, it has the Weimar “drooping” eagle marks on the barreled receiver with the S/42G crest on top of the receiver. The receiver, barrel and front sight are original matching numbers. The rear sight and sight base match each other and are proofed marked. The front H band, follower, band spring, and one of the trigger guard/action screws also have markings (see pics). The floor plate is scrubbed.
The bolt has Waffenamt marks on the bolt, firing pin (same number), bolt shroud and extractor collar.
The stock is a red glue laminate stock with the typical Russian shellac they put on the Russian capture guns. See pics for condition. This one still has the "H" (Heer) stamp although it is light. The buttplate has reddish brown paint on the inside the cup.
Bore condition is VG+. It has strong rifling and is shiny with light frosting in the groves.
This is a nice solid example of a hard to find code and date K98 rifle.
